The origin of Afghan carpets

A country with a millennia-long history of wool carpet making is one of the country's main treasures. Its exquisite wool is dyed with natural dyes. Handmade Afghan carpets are characterised by their timelessness and colour-fastness. Afghan carpet dyes are made according to secret family recipes. Afghan carpets add warmth and coziness to your home as a living room carpet, runner carpet, bedroom carpet or hallway carpet. In our Afghan wool carpet category, you will find Kargai and Khalmohammadi wool carpets and Aqcha wool carpets in our extremely wide range of hundreds of items. All our Afghan carpets are made of high quality wool, dyed to last and are eco-friendly. The tradition of carpet making in Afghanistan goes back centuries. In the beginning, carpets were made by nomadic tribes. They were first used to warm their tents and later for commercial purposes. Archaeological excavations have shown that some designs can be 1000 years old, such as the "Elephant Foot" design.

How is the Afghan carpet made?

Nowadays, Oriental carpets are mainly made in northern Afghanistan. There is a lot of work involved in making an Afghan rug. Afghan carpet making starts with the sheep. The green grassland where the sheep are grazed by the shepherds is important. The cleaner and greener it is, the finer the wool of the sheep. After the sheep have been sheared, the wool is collected separately. There are two parts of the sheep's wool, the one that comes into contact with the outside world, from which most Afghan rugs are made. The other part, which does not come into contact with the outside world and is therefore closer to the sheep's body, is used to make the finer knotted carpets. Once the shepherds have sold the natural wool to the yarn makers, they spin the wool into yarn. Even this part of the carpet-making process takes several days. Once the yarn is finished, the dyeing process follows. For dyeing, materials extracted from nature are used. The wool is cooked in the dye in hot pots for hours. Once the wool is sufficiently coloured, the next step is to dry the yarn. The drying process takes a few days in the summer and in the winter a ventilator is used for drying. After these processes, the yarns are purchased by the trader to make the oriental carpet. Afghans living in Pakistan make the carpets in workshops, in Afghanistan rather in their homes (Karkhana). In the weaving loom, the warp yarns are first placed on which the knotting is done. Each knot is tied tightly, using appropriate tools. After the knotting is completed, it comes to shearing to the appropriate thickness and washing. Oriental carpets are washed four times. The washing is done to prevent the colour from bleeding. By bleeding we mean: when water touches the carpet, the different colours fuse together. In the summer, the carpet is dried in the hot sun and in the winter by ventilators. After that, the Afghan carpet is considered ready. Our representatives in Afghanistan and Pakistan collect the finished carpets. Once a large quantity is ready, we import the carpets to our warehouse in Budapest, where we have been selling them to our partners, resellers and of course to our online customers since 1993. All our Afghan carpets come with a guarantee.

How do I clean an Afghan Oriental carpet?

Minor stains do not require much expertise. You can remove it with a slightly damp cloth. It can be vacuumed at any time, but only in the direction of the thread, like all Oriental carpets. The worst enemy of wool carpets is moths. So it is worth airing more often, especially in the summer, and moving the carpet from time to time to prevent moths from laying eggs underneath. We recommend professional carpet cleaning companies only for larger soiling. But since it is a Handmade carpet, it can be restored at any time.

Where can I lay the Afghan carpet?

Because Afghan carpet is durable and strong, it can be laid in the busiest areas. Of course, it would be a mistake to step on such a precious carpet with wet or dirty shoes. Of course, this does not mean that the carpet will be ruined immediately, but it will lose its life. The elegance of an Afghan carpet will give your home an exclusive atmosphere. It can also be laid under a dining table as it is easy to clean. Heavy furniture should not be placed on an Afghan carpet, especially if it has thin legs, as this can tear through the carpet over time. You can also put the carpet in homes with underfloor heating because it lets heat through.

Origin of the Aqcha wool carpet

The handmade Aqcha carpet is made in the northern part of Afghanistan, around the town of Aqcha, in an area inhabited by nomads and villagers. The most common patterns are the Elephant Foot and Bokhara patterns. Aqcha rug is knotted using the Gheordes technique. This means double knotting. It is made from traditional Afghan wool. Its colours are obtained from nature, from different plants and flowers. As it belongs to the category of carpets with less dense knots, it has a lower price. However, it is as durable as other Afghan rugs. It can also be used in high traffic areas such as offices. It will add a special atmosphere to your home as a living room rug or bedroom rug. Available in separate sizes for runners in the Runner carpet category. The making of an Aqchai rug is similar to that of other Afghan rugs. After knotting, the fibres are cut short, then washed four times on stones and left to dry in the sun. The colour remains durable and does not fade with further washing. It is a 100% handmade carpet, that requires great skill, patience and time to make. It can be used in homes with underfloor heating. Contains no allergenic substances.
