Guide to using handmade wool carpets

Care and cleaning

The Oriental carpet you have bought will have a long life if you follow the advice below:

  • When laying your Oriental carpet, make sure that it is not exposed to direct strong sunlight and does not have contact with a wet floor surface!
  • Do not walk on the Oriental carpet with street shoes.
  • Do not allow your pets to lie down on the oriental carpet without a blanket! As longer nails can damage the knot
  • Vacuum only gently on the lowest setting, taking care not to fluff the wool carpet, always vacuuming in the direction of the fibre and ensuring that the vacuum cleaner does not suck up the fringes of the carpet!
  • Oriental carpets should only be wiped with a slightly damp cloth, and after cleaning, pull the rag through several times according to the direction of the fibre.
  • For storage, it is best to roll up the cleaned carpet loosely.
  • Insects, moths, etc. can be successfully controlled by using commercially available branded moth-killing products or lavender oil. But plain lavender is also a perfect solution and even gives a pleasant scent to the room.

  • Only a professional person can do the major carpet cleaning. Home cleaning of some oriental carpets, such as silk carpets, is not recommended at all. Most oriental carpets are made of 100% wool, are colourfast and have been washed.

An old tradition that damages oriental carpets

Carpet dusting with a carpet beater stick, an old tradition, is an unfortunately flawed practice that can cause serious damage to Oriental carpets, and indeed any carpet. It can lead to a significant deterioration in the durability of carpet knots. Oriental carpets are often made of special materials, such as silk or wool, which require special care. When a oriental carpet is dusted with carpet beater stick, the beating can damage the knots, weaken the weave and distort the design. Strong impacts can generate vibrations that can cause further damage to the structure of the oriental carpet. In addition, the dust and dirt released from the carpet as a result of dusting will only be dispersed into the air, making it dangerous for ourselves.

Homemade practices for carpet cleaning in Afghanistan

In Afghanistan, there is an old home-made carpet cleaning tradition that takes advantage of nature's gifts. I remember from my childhood that we used to do this kind of carpet cleaning once every two or three years. The first step in the process was to find an area of grass in nature that was not wet or dirty. It was important that the grass was reasonably clean, so no animals were grazing nearby and no dogs were being walked in the area. We carefully laid down the oriental carpet on the fresh grass so that the colour of the carpet was in close contact with the green surface. Four of us took hold of the four corners of the mat and pulled it back and forth in two directions. This pulling motion was the cleaning process itself. We were gently moving the fibres of the carpet over this grassy surface, using nature's own cleaning power. After a few pulls, we gently turned the carpet over and then used a clean cloth to sweep the grass residue off the carpet in the direction of the fibre. This step ensured that all the fibres of the carpet returned to their former state of cleanliness and beauty. As the colours of the Oriental carpets were extracted from natural materials, this simple, natural process brought the original colours of the carpet back to life. Although this traditional method of carpet cleaning is still in use in Afghanistan today, it is important to note that there are much more advanced and efficient methods of cleaning oriental carpets today. Professional carpet cleaning companies have special techniques and materials that thoroughly clean the carpet without damaging the fine fibres or the pattern of the carpet.

Oriental carpet traditional cleaning

As time goes on, advances in modern technology and expertise allow oriental carpets to retain their beauty and original condition for even longer, while being gently cleaned. It is important to understand that carpet cleaning requires expertise and attention, and it is always advisable to choose the most appropriate methods and service providers for carpet care.

How to clean wool carpets

The method described below only applies to soft drinks, sweets, dairy products, soups, syrups, glues, water-based paints. Never use hot water or alkaline detergents when cleaning. Home cleaning of greasy and oily soils is not recommended.

- To effectively treat wet stains, it is recommended to use a paper towel or absorbent cloth to soak up the liquid. It is important not to rub the stain, as this will only increase the surface area of the stain and may cause the dirt to penetrate deeper. Once you have soaked up the liquid, use a cotton cloth dampened with cold water to press and tap the stain. However, be careful not to soak the carpet completely. Repeat this process until the stain is completely removed. In the meantime, rotate or replace the cotton cloth as necessary to prevent the dirt from getting back onto the carpet. Always work from the edge to the centre of the stain to avoid spreading the stain further. Once you have successfully removed the liquid that caused the stain, it is important to dry the carpet quickly to avoid waving. To do this, you can use a fan or a hairdryer set to cold mode. Brush the surface of the carpet several times during the drying process to help the moisture evaporate. Always brush in the direction of the fibres to maintain the original direction of the carpet fibres.

It is important to note that these instructions are general advice. Always check the manufacturer's recommendations and carpet care product labels before using carpet cleaning products. Some carpets are made of special materials that may require different cleaning procedures. If you're unsure about how to clean your carpet, always ask a carpet cleaning company for help or call us for some good advice.
