Aqcha Bukhara Oriental rug 151x196 cm – handmade Afghan rug

Afghan Aqcha rug: features of the knotted pile

This 151 × 196 cm Afghan Aqcha rug originates from Afghanistan. It is hand-knotted with a wool pile and is 8–10 mm thick. The rug has a blue and beige colour palette.

The Aqcha rug is 151 cm wide, 196 cm long and 8–10 mm thick. The knot density is approximately 80,000 knots/m². The knot count is given per square metre, allowing this rug to be compared with handmade Oriental rugs of different sizes in this respect. This figure does not represent the total number of knots in the entire rug. Its dimensions may also make it suitable for a bedroom.

This handmade rug has a pile hand-knotted from wool yarn. Knotted wool fibres form the pile of the rug. Pile direction matters for more than appearance: this is also the direction to follow when vacuuming. The way the surface reflects light may vary depending on which end of the rug you view it from.

The Afghan Aqcha rug is knotted by hand. Knots formed from wool yarn make up the pile of the rug; this construction method is one of the defining features of the rug. The video showing how it is made provides an overview of the process.

The video below presents the origin and making of the Afghan rug.

Cleaning the hand-knotted wool pile

Regular, gentle vacuuming is the basis of caring for the Afghan Aqcha rug. Set the vacuum cleaner to low suction and move the head in the direction of the wool pile. Keep the area beneath the rug clean as well. Avoid vigorous rubbing of the wool pile and, where possible, treat stains before they dry.

Treat small stains before they dry, using a clean, slightly damp cloth. Avoid vigorous rubbing and soaking the surface. Even a cleaning product suitable for wool should only be used as directed and after testing it first. If the dirt cannot be removed gently, or the whole rug needs cleaning, consult a professional rug cleaner.
