Material and making of the 305 × 391 cm Chobi Kilim

The Chobi Kilim with product code 105201 is a rug from Afghanistan made from 100% wool. Its width of 305 cm and length of 391 cm give it an approximate surface area of 12 square metres. The exact measurements matter because the 300 × 400 cm size category is only an approximate classification for this piece: its actual side measurements are 305 and 391 cm.

The illustrated Chobi Kilim production process includes washing and drying after weaving. After washing, the textiles are dried in the sun or, depending on the weather, with the help of fans. The workshop photograph below illustrates the handwork involved. The illustrative images and video provide further information about Chobi Kilim rugs; the product's own photographs show the 305 × 391 cm piece available to order.

The Chobi Kilim's wool material and woven structure

This hand woven rug is connected to the textile-weaving tradition of the Maymanah area. The wool threads are interwoven on a loom to create the Kilim's woven structure. Its approximate thickness of 4–5 mm is one of the product's key characteristics. It weighs approximately 1.4 kg per square metre; this is a value per unit area, not the weight of the entire rug.

Gentle care for a woollen Kilim rug

Use gentle cleaning methods to suit the wool material and hand woven construction. For regular dust removal, use your vacuum cleaner on its lowest setting. Do not beat dust out of the rug: cleaning with a carpet beater can damage the weave. Keep the surface beneath the rug clean as well.

If a small mark appears on the Kilim, begin treating it gently as soon as possible. Use a slightly damp cloth and avoid soaking the material. Limiting water use is particularly important when damp cleaning; seek expert help for more extensive cleaning instead of washing the entire rug at home.

Use even a rug cleaner formulated for wool only after testing it first. Check how the rug's material and colour respond on a small area first. If a stain persists or the entire surface needs a thorough clean, consult a specialist experienced in cleaning hand woven wool rugs. Tell them the rug's material, how it was made and the nature of the soiling.
