Hand woven Afghan Chobi Kilim rug 203x297 cm

Making the 203 × 297 cm Chobi Kilim

This 203 × 297 cm Chobi Kilim rug is a woven wool textile made in Afghanistan, in red and blue. Its width is 203 cm and its length is 297 cm. Hand weaving describes how it is made: the wool yarns are interlaced on a loom. The name Chobi Kilim identifies this type of woven rug.

The video introduces the making and origins of Chobi Kilim rugs.

A Kilim is a flat-woven textile whose surface consists of intersecting warp and weft yarns. The warp yarns are stretched on the loom, and the weft yarns are worked between them. The textile has no knotted pile, so the weave itself forms its structure. In this Chobi Kilim, this production method is combined with wool yarns. The approximately 4–5 mm thickness describes the thin construction of the entire textile, rather than the length of a separate pile layer.

After weaving, the Chobi Kilim rug is washed and then dried. In favourable weather, drying takes place outdoors; at other times, fans assist the process. These finishing stages are part of production. Subsequent care at home requires gentle cleaning of the wool rug, avoiding soaking.

Afghan woollen Kilim measuring 203 × 297 cm

The 203 × 297 cm wool rug covers approximately 6.03 m². The wool yarns form the rug's surface, so cleaning must take account of both the material and the hand woven structure. The name Chobi Kilim refers to this Afghan woven rug type.

Gentle care of the Chobi Kilim

Choose a careful cleaning method for this hand woven wool rug. A vacuum cleaner on low suction can be used for everyday dust removal. Use a slightly damp cloth for small marks, taking care to avoid soaking the textile. Whenever possible, treat stains before they dry.

Even a wool-suitable cleaner should only be used after testing it on a small, inconspicuous area. If the entire Kilim needs cleaning or a stain is difficult to treat, seek professional help. Hanging up the textile and beating it with a carpet beater can damage the hand weaving. The accompanying photograph illustrates this cleaning method, which should be avoided.

Avoid the rug-beating method shown in the photograph when caring for a woollen Kilim.
