Hand woven Maimana Kilim rug 206x292 cm

Making the 206 × 292 cm Maimana Kilim

This hand woven Maimana Kilim is 206 cm wide and 292 cm long. You can examine the burgundy and green colours of this 206 × 292 cm Afghan woven wool rug in its own product photographs. Understanding how it is made involves the work on the loom, the wool material and the finishing washes.

The video introduces the making and origins of Maimana Kilim rugs.

A Kilim is a flat-woven textile whose surface consists of intersecting warp and weft yarns. The warp yarns are stretched on the loom, and the weft yarns are worked between them. The textile has no knotted pile, so the weave itself forms its structure. In this Maimana Kilim, this production method is combined with wool yarns. The approximately 4–5 mm thickness describes the thin construction of the entire textile, rather than the length of a separate pile layer.

After weaving, the Maimana Kilim rug is washed and then dried. In favourable weather, drying takes place outdoors; at other times, fans assist the process. These finishing stages are part of production. Subsequent care at home requires gentle cleaning of the wool rug, avoiding soaking.

Material of the 206 × 292 cm Maimana Kilim

The 206 × 292 cm wool rug covers approximately 6.02 m². The wool yarns form the rug's surface, so cleaning must take account of both the material and the hand woven structure. The name Maimana Kilim refers to this Afghan woven rug type.

The rug's own photograph series includes full views and close-up images. View these together when choosing the rug. The illustration accompanying the description introduces the Maimana Kilim type; the specific rug's details are shown in its product photographs.

Gentle care of the Maimana Kilim

Care for this woollen Kilim by vacuuming gently on your vacuum cleaner's lowest setting. Use a slightly damp cloth for small, fresh stains. Do not saturate the textile with water, and treat marks before they dry whenever possible. Careful stain treatment suited to the wool material is required.

Before using rug-cleaning foam suitable for wool, test it on a small, inconspicuous area. We recommend professional help for heavier soiling or a thorough clean. Do not clean the Maimana Kilim by beating it with a carpet beater: this can damage its hand woven structure. The accompanying illustration shows a traditional beating method to avoid; it is not a cleaning recommendation.

Avoid the rug-beating method shown in the photograph when caring for a woollen Kilim.
