Handmade oriental Kazak rug 116x178

Kazak rug – characteristics of the knotted pile

This 116 × 178 cm Kazak rug originates from Afghanistan. It is handmade with a wool pile and is 8–10 mm thick. The rug is grey and beige.

The Kazak rug is 116 cm wide, 178 cm long and 8–10 mm thick. The knot density is approximately 180,000 knots/m². Knot density is one numerical characteristic of the pile structure. It should be considered alongside thickness; a thicker rug does not in itself have a higher knot density. Its dimensions may also make it suitable for a bedroom.

It has a knotted wool pile. The warp threads are wool. The fibres of the handmade pile lie in a particular direction. As a result, changes in lighting and viewing angle can make the overall appearance lighter or darker. Differences of this kind between photographs taken from opposite ends of the rug relate to the direction of the pile.

Kazak is the name of the rug type; this handmade Kazak rug was handmade in Afghanistan. Its pattern is based on geometric elements. Ghiordes knots were used to create the pile. Knotting and forming the pile are followed by washing: the rug is washed four times. Washing is a finishing step in production and does not describe how or how often to clean the rug at home. After washing during production, the rug is dried in the sun.

Caring for a Kazak rug

The handmade wool pile requires gentle cleaning. When vacuuming the Kazak rug, choose the lowest setting and work in the direction of the pile. Move the rug occasionally so that you can clean the area underneath it. Regular inspection of the wool rug also plays a part in preventing moth damage.

Treat small stains before they dry, using a clean, slightly damp cloth. Avoid vigorous rubbing and soaking the pile. Even a cleaning product suitable for wool should only be used as directed and after testing it first. If the dirt cannot be removed gently, or the whole rug needs cleaning, entrust the task to a professional rug cleaner.
