Handmade oriental Kazak rug 169x235

Kazak rug from Afghanistan

The defining features of this Kazak rug are its 169 × 235 cm dimensions, 8–10 mm thickness and wool material. The rug originates from Afghanistan and is handmade. Grey and beige shades define the rug's appearance.

The Kazak rug is 169 cm wide, 235 cm long and 8–10 mm thick. Its knot density is approximately 180,000 knots/m². Knot density is one numerical characteristic of the pile structure. It should be considered alongside thickness; a thicker rug does not in itself have a higher knot density. This size may also be an option for a living room.

The knotted part of the rug is made of wool. The knots are tied around wool warp threads. The knotted wool fibres form the rug's surface. Pile direction matters for more than appearance: it is also the direction you should follow when vacuuming. The way the surface reflects light may differ depending on which end of the rug you view it from.

This handmade Afghan Kazak rug is an oriental rug. Its geometric patterns are complemented by a wool pile formed by hand. Ghiordes knots were used to create the pile. Knotting and forming the pile are followed by washing: the rug is washed four times. Washing is a finishing step in production and does not describe how or how often to clean the rug at home. After washing during production, the rug is dried in the sun.

Caring for a Kazak rug

Regular, careful vacuuming is the basis of caring for a Kazak rug. Set the vacuum cleaner to low suction and move the head in the direction in which the wool fibres lie. Keep the area underneath the rug clean too. Avoid rubbing the wool pile vigorously and, where possible, treat marks before they dry.

Treat small stains before they dry, using a clean, slightly damp cloth. Avoid vigorous rubbing and soaking the pile. Even a cleaning product suitable for wool should only be used as directed and after testing it first. If the dirt cannot be removed gently, or the whole rug needs cleaning, entrust the task to a professional rug cleaner.
