Large handmade oriental Kazak rug 548x424

Kazak rug: size, material and construction

This 424 × 548 cm Kazak rug originates from Afghanistan. It is handmade with a wool pile and is 8–10 mm thick. The rug features a burgundy and beige colour palette.

The Kazak rug is 424 cm wide, 548 cm long and 8–10 mm thick. Its knot density is approximately 180,000 knots/m². This value expresses the number of knots per unit of surface area. Thickness is a separate characteristic: the two measurements describe different aspects of the knotted structure.

It has a knotted wool pile. The warp threads are wool. The appearance of the wool pile may change with the viewing angle. This is caused by the direction in which the knotted fibres lie: the rug may reflect more light from one direction and appear darker from the other. It is therefore worth comparing product photographs taken from different angles.

This handmade Afghan Kazak rug is an oriental rug. Its geometric patterns are complemented by a wool pile formed by hand. Ghiordes knots were used to create the pile. The finishing stages of making the rug include four washes. This is part of the production process; during use, continue to follow gentle care instructions suitable for wool. After washing during production, the rug is dried in the sun.

Kazak rug: gentle care

For regular care of the Kazak rug, use a low suction setting on your vacuum cleaner. Work in the direction in which the fibres lie and avoid rubbing the wool pile vigorously. Remember to keep the area underneath the rug clean; moving the rug occasionally allows you to remove any dust that has collected beneath it.

For liquid spills, first blot up the moisture with a clean cloth. Do not rub the wool pile vigorously or use a cleaning product unless you know it is suitable for wool. Always test the chosen product on an inconspicuous area. Leave extensive or stubborn soiling, as well as a full clean, to a professional.
