Large handmade oriental Kazak rug 553x416

Handmade Kazak rug in handmade wool

This 416 × 553 cm Kazak rug originates from Afghanistan. It is handmade with a wool pile and is 8–10 mm thick. The rug is burgundy.

The Kazak rug is 416 cm wide, 553 cm long and 8–10 mm thick. Dimensions are particularly important when choosing online: the proportions shown in the photograph should be considered alongside these measurements. Checking the full width and length together helps you decide whether the selected rug is the right size.

The pile is handmade from wool yarn. The fibres of the handmade pile lie in a particular direction. As a result, changes in lighting and viewing angle can make the overall appearance lighter or darker. Differences of this kind between photographs taken from opposite ends of the rug relate to the direction of the pile.

Kazak is the name of the rug type; this handmade Kazak rug was handmade in Afghanistan. Its pattern is based on geometric elements. The rug is made using Ghiordes knots. Knotting and forming the pile are followed by washing: the rug is washed four times. Washing is a finishing step in production and does not describe how or how often to clean the rug at home. After washing during production, the rug is dried in the sun.

Cleaning advice for this wool rug

Regular, careful vacuuming is the basis of caring for a Kazak rug. Set the vacuum cleaner to low suction and move the head in the direction in which the wool fibres lie. Keep the area underneath the rug clean too. Avoid rubbing the wool pile vigorously and, where possible, treat marks before they dry.

Prompt, gentle action is important when dealing with a stain. Try removing fresh marks with a slightly damp cloth, without soaking the rug or rubbing vigorously. Only use a cleaning product suitable for wool rugs, following the manufacturer's instructions and testing it first. For more extensive cleaning, choose a professional experienced in caring for handmade rugs.
