Mushwani prayer rug 93x129 cm – hand-knotted nomadic rug

Mushwani prayer rug from Afghanistan

This Mushwani prayer rug measures 93 cm in width and 129 cm in length. This handmade Afghan rug is knotted by hand in Afghanistan and is 8–10 mm thick. Shades of burgundy define the colour palette of the rug.

The Mushwani prayer rug measures 93 cm in width, 129 cm in length and 8–10 mm in thickness. Dimensions are particularly important when choosing online: the proportions visible in photographs should be considered alongside them. Checking the full width and length together helps you decide whether the rug you have selected is the right size. The rug may also be suitable for a bedroom, provided the available space accommodates its dimensions.

This handmade rug has a pile knotted from wool. The knotted fibres form the surface of the rug that is walked on. The direction in which the fibres lie affects how they reflect light: the same surface may appear lighter from one end and darker from the other. Please bear this in mind when comparing the photographs.

This Baluch Mushwani rug belongs to the category of Afghan nomadic rugs. Its geometric decoration is associated with the design traditions of nomadic rug making. For this rug, the wool material, hand knotting and Afghan origin together define the product type.

Caring for your Mushwani prayer rug

The hand-knotted wool pile requires gentle cleaning. When vacuuming the Mushwani prayer rug, select the lowest suction setting and work in the direction of the pile. Move the rug occasionally so that you can clean the area underneath. Regularly inspecting the Afghan rug also plays a part in preventing moth damage.

Treat small stains before they dry, using a clean, slightly damp cloth. Avoid vigorous rubbing and soaking the surface. Even a cleaning product suitable for wool should only be used as directed and after testing it first. If the dirt cannot be removed gently, or the whole rug needs cleaning, consult a professional rug cleaner.
