Burgundy Aqchai Oriental rug 74x104 cm – handmade rug

Afghan Aqchai rug hand-knotted from wool

This Afghan Aqchai rug is a handmade Oriental rug of Afghan origin, measuring 74 × 104 cm. With its wool pile, it is 8–10 mm thick. Shades of burgundy define the colour palette of the rug.

The Aqchai rug is 74 cm wide, 104 cm long and 8–10 mm thick. The knot density is approximately 80,000 knots/m². This figure indicates the number of knots per unit of surface area. Thickness is a separate characteristic: these two measurements describe different aspects of the knotted structure.

This handmade rug has a pile hand-knotted from wool yarn. The knotted fibres form the surface of the rug that is walked on. The direction in which the fibres lie affects how they reflect light: the same surface may appear lighter from one end and darker from the other. Please bear this in mind when comparing the photographs.

The Afghan Aqchai rug is knotted by hand. Knots formed from wool yarn make up the pile of the rug; this construction method is one of the defining features of the rug. The video showing how it is made provides an overview of the process.

The video below presents the origin and making of the Afghan rug.

Cleaning the hand-knotted wool pile

For routine care of the Afghan Aqchai rug, use a low suction setting on your vacuum cleaner. Work in the direction of the pile and avoid rubbing the wool surface vigorously. Remember to keep the area beneath the rug clean as well; moving the rug occasionally allows you to remove dust that has collected underneath.

For spilled liquids, first blot up the moisture with a clean cloth. Do not rub the wool surface vigorously or use a cleaning product unless you know it is suitable for wool. Always test the chosen product in a less visible area first. For extensive or stubborn soiling, or a full clean, consult a professional.
