Burgundy Aqchai Oriental rug 75x116 cm – handmade rug

Afghan Aqchai rug: features of the knotted pile

This Afghan Aqchai rug is a handmade Oriental rug of Afghan origin, measuring 75 × 116 cm. With its wool pile, it is 8–10 mm thick. The rug has a burgundy colour palette.

The Aqchai rug is 75 cm wide, 116 cm long and 8–10 mm thick. The knot density is approximately 80,000 knots/m². This figure indicates the number of knots per unit of surface area. Thickness is a separate characteristic: these two measurements describe different aspects of the knotted structure.

The knotted part of this handmade rug is made of wool. Hand knotting and the wool pile define the structure of the rug. The direction in which the pile lies affects the appearance: the same rug can look lighter or darker when viewed from different directions. It is therefore useful to compare product photographs taken from different angles before buying.

The Afghan Aqchai rug is knotted by hand. Knots formed from wool yarn make up the pile of the rug; this construction method is one of the defining features of the rug. The video showing how it is made provides an overview of the process.

The video below presents the origin and making of the Afghan rug.

The width of 75 cm and length of 116 cm refer to this specific rug. Alongside the illustration of this type of rug, please also review the photographs of the actual product.

Cleaning the hand-knotted wool pile

Regular, gentle vacuuming is the basis of caring for the Afghan Aqchai rug. Set the vacuum cleaner to low suction and move the head in the direction of the wool pile. Keep the area beneath the rug clean as well. Avoid vigorous rubbing of the wool pile and, where possible, treat stains before they dry.

Treat small stains before they dry, using a clean, slightly damp cloth. Avoid vigorous rubbing and soaking the surface. Even a cleaning product suitable for wool should only be used as directed and after testing it first. If the dirt cannot be removed gently, or the whole rug needs cleaning, consult a professional rug cleaner.
