Handmade oriental Kazak rug 120x177

Kazak rug – characteristics of the knotted pile

This 120 × 177 cm Kazak rug originates from Afghanistan. It is handmade with a wool pile and is 8–10 mm thick. Beige shades define the rug's appearance.

The Kazak rug is 120 cm wide, 177 cm long and 8–10 mm thick. The knot density is approximately 180,000 knots/m². The knot count is given per square metre, allowing you to compare this aspect of the rug with handmade rugs of different sizes. This figure does not represent the total number of knots in the whole rug. The rug may also suit a bedroom, provided the available space is large enough.

It has a knotted wool pile. The warp threads are wool. The fibres of the handmade pile lie in a particular direction. As a result, changes in lighting and viewing angle can make the overall appearance lighter or darker. Differences of this kind between photographs taken from opposite ends of the rug relate to the direction of the pile.

This handmade Afghan Kazak rug is an oriental rug. Its geometric patterns are complemented by a wool pile formed by hand. The rug is made using Ghiordes knots. The finishing stages of making the rug include four washes. This is part of the production process; during use, continue to follow gentle care instructions suitable for wool. After washing during production, the rug is dried in the sun.

Caring for a Kazak rug

For regular care of the Kazak rug, use a low suction setting on your vacuum cleaner. Work in the direction in which the fibres lie and avoid rubbing the wool pile vigorously. Remember to keep the area underneath the rug clean; moving the rug occasionally allows you to remove any dust that has collected beneath it.

Prompt, gentle action is important when dealing with a stain. Try removing fresh marks with a slightly damp cloth, without soaking the rug or rubbing vigorously. Only use a cleaning product suitable for wool rugs, following the manufacturer's instructions and testing it first. For more extensive cleaning, choose a professional experienced in caring for handmade rugs.
