Afghan Bokhara rug from Afghanistan
This Afghan Bokhara rug measures 100 cm in width and 145 cm in length. This handmade Afghan rug is knotted by hand in Afghanistan and is 8–10 mm thick. Shades of burgundy define the colour palette of the rug. The rug is made with a Bokhara pattern.
The Bokhara rug measures 100 cm in width, 145 cm in length and 8–10 mm in thickness. The knot density is approximately 180,000 knots/m². Knot density is one of the numerical characteristics of the pile structure. It should be considered alongside thickness; a thicker rug does not, in itself, mean denser knotting. Its dimensions may also make it suitable for a bedroom.
This handmade rug has a pile knotted from wool. The fibres of the hand-knotted pile lie in a particular direction. Changes in lighting and viewing angle can therefore produce a lighter or darker overall appearance. This difference between photographs taken from opposite ends of the rug is related to the direction of the pile.
The Afghan Bokhara rug is knotted by hand. Knots formed from wool yarn make up the pile of the rug; this construction method is one of the defining features of the rug. The video showing how it is made provides an overview of the process.
The video below presents the origin and making of the Afghan rug.

Caring for your Bokhara rug
Regular, gentle vacuuming is the basis of caring for the Afghan Bokhara rug. Set the vacuum cleaner to low suction and move the head in the direction of the wool pile. Keep the area beneath the rug clean as well. Avoid vigorous rubbing of the wool pile and, where possible, treat stains before they dry.
Treat small stains before they dry, using a clean, slightly damp cloth. Avoid vigorous rubbing and soaking the surface. Even a cleaning product suitable for wool should only be used as directed and after testing it first. If the dirt cannot be removed gently, or the whole rug needs cleaning, consult a professional rug cleaner.
