Afghan Khal Mohammadi rug: features of the knotted pile
The key features of this Afghan Khal Mohammadi rug are its 104 × 141 cm dimensions, 8–10 mm thickness and wool material. The rug originates from Afghanistan and is knotted by hand. The rug has a burgundy colour palette.
The Khal Mohammadi rug measures 104 cm in width, 141 cm in length and 8–10 mm in thickness. Its knot density is approximately 180,000 knots/m². This figure indicates the number of knots per unit of surface area. Thickness is a separate characteristic: these two measurements describe different aspects of the knotted structure. Its dimensions may also make it suitable for a bedroom.
The knotted part of this handmade rug is made of wool. The knotted fibres form the surface of the rug that is walked on. The direction in which the fibres lie affects how they reflect light: the same surface may appear lighter from one end and darker from the other. Please bear this in mind when comparing the photographs.
The Afghan Khal Mohammadi rug is knotted by hand. Knots formed from wool yarn make up the pile of the rug; this construction method is one of the defining features of the rug. The video showing how it is made provides an overview of the process.

Cleaning the hand-knotted wool pile
The hand-knotted wool pile requires gentle cleaning. When vacuuming the Afghan Khal Mohammadi rug, select the lowest suction setting and work in the direction of the pile. Move the rug occasionally so that you can clean the area underneath. Regularly inspecting the Afghan rug also plays a part in preventing moth damage.
For spilled liquids, first blot up the moisture with a clean cloth. Do not rub the wool surface vigorously or use a cleaning product unless you know it is suitable for wool. Always test the chosen product in a less visible area first. For extensive or stubborn soiling, or a full clean, consult a professional.
