Burgundy Afghan runner rug with a Caucasian pattern 52x143 cm – hand-knotted Oriental runner rug

Afghan Caucasian runner rug hand-knotted from wool

This Afghan Caucasian runner rug is a handmade Oriental rug of Afghan origin, measuring 52 × 143 cm. With its wool pile, it is 8–10 mm thick. Shades of burgundy define the colour palette of the rug.

The Caucasian runner rug measures 52 cm in width, 143 cm in length and 8–10 mm in thickness. Its knot density is approximately 180,000 knots/m². The knot count is given per square metre, allowing this rug to be compared with handmade Oriental rugs of different sizes in this respect. This figure does not represent the total number of knots in the entire rug. This size may also be suitable for a hallway.

The knotted part of this handmade rug is made of wool. Knotted wool fibres form the pile of the rug. Pile direction matters for more than appearance: this is also the direction to follow when vacuuming. The way the surface reflects light may vary depending on which end of the rug you view it from.

The Afghan Caucasian runner rug is knotted by hand. Knots formed from wool yarn make up the pile of the rug; this construction method is one of the defining features of the rug. The video showing how it is made provides an overview of the process.

Caring for your Caucasian runner rug

When cleaning the Afghan Caucasian runner rug, protecting the wool fibres should be your first consideration. Vacuum on a low setting, following the direction of the pile. Clean underneath the rug regularly and inspect the less visible areas from time to time. Regularly check the less visible parts of the rug for dirt as well.

Treat small stains before they dry, using a clean, slightly damp cloth. Avoid vigorous rubbing and soaking the surface. Even a cleaning product suitable for wool should only be used as directed and after testing it first. If the dirt cannot be removed gently, or the whole rug needs cleaning, consult a professional rug cleaner.
