Burgundy Bokhara Afghan rug 102x154 cm – handmade Oriental rug

Afghan Bokhara rug: dimensions, material and making

This Afghan Bokhara rug is a handmade Oriental rug of Afghan origin, measuring 102 × 154 cm. With its wool pile, it is 8–10 mm thick. Shades of burgundy define the colour palette of the rug. The rug is made with a Bokhara pattern.

The Bokhara rug measures 102 cm in width, 154 cm in length and 8–10 mm in thickness. The knot density is approximately 180,000 knots/m². Knot density is one of the numerical characteristics of the pile structure. It should be considered alongside thickness; a thicker rug does not, in itself, mean denser knotting. The rug may also be suitable for a bedroom, provided the available space accommodates its dimensions.

This handmade rug has a pile knotted from wool. The fibres of the hand-knotted pile lie in a particular direction. Changes in lighting and viewing angle can therefore produce a lighter or darker overall appearance. This difference between photographs taken from opposite ends of the rug is related to the direction of the pile.

The Afghan Bokhara rug is knotted by hand. Knots formed from wool yarn make up the pile of the rug; this construction method is one of the defining features of the rug. The video showing how it is made provides an overview of the process.

The video below presents the origin and making of the Afghan rug.

The width of 102 cm and length of 154 cm refer to this specific rug. Alongside the illustration of this type of rug, please also review the photographs of the actual product.

Cleaning the hand-knotted wool pile

For routine care of the Afghan Bokhara rug, use a low suction setting on your vacuum cleaner. Work in the direction of the pile and avoid rubbing the wool surface vigorously. Remember to keep the area beneath the rug clean as well; moving the rug occasionally allows you to remove dust that has collected underneath.

For spilled liquids, first blot up the moisture with a clean cloth. Do not rub the wool surface vigorously or use a cleaning product unless you know it is suitable for wool. Always test the chosen product in a less visible area first. For extensive or stubborn soiling, or a full clean, consult a professional.
