Afghan Bokhara rug: dimensions, material and making
This Afghan Bokhara rug is a handmade Oriental rug of Afghan origin, measuring 99 × 150 cm. With its wool pile, it is 8–10 mm thick. Shades of burgundy define the colour palette of the rug. The rug is made with a Bokhara pattern.
The Bokhara rug measures 99 cm in width, 150 cm in length and 8–10 mm in thickness. The knot density is approximately 180,000 knots/m². This figure indicates the number of knots per unit of surface area. Thickness is a separate characteristic: these two measurements describe different aspects of the knotted structure. The rug may also be suitable for a bedroom, provided the available space accommodates its dimensions.
The knotted part of this handmade rug is made of wool. The fibres of the hand-knotted pile lie in a particular direction. Changes in lighting and viewing angle can therefore produce a lighter or darker overall appearance. This difference between photographs taken from opposite ends of the rug is related to the direction of the pile.
The Afghan Bokhara rug is knotted by hand. Knots formed from wool yarn make up the pile of the rug; this construction method is one of the defining features of the rug. The video showing how it is made provides an overview of the process.
The video below presents the origin and making of the Afghan rug.

Cleaning the hand-knotted wool pile
The hand-knotted wool pile requires gentle cleaning. When vacuuming the Afghan Bokhara rug, select the lowest suction setting and work in the direction of the pile. Move the rug occasionally so that you can clean the area underneath. Regularly inspecting the Afghan rug also plays a part in preventing moth damage.
Treat small stains before they dry, using a clean, slightly damp cloth. Avoid vigorous rubbing and soaking the surface. Even a cleaning product suitable for wool should only be used as directed and after testing it first. If the dirt cannot be removed gently, or the whole rug needs cleaning, consult a professional rug cleaner.
