Brown Bukhara Afghan rug 117x181 cm – handmade Oriental rug

Introducing the 117 × 181 cm Afghan Bukhara rug

This 117 × 181 cm Afghan Bukhara rug originates from Afghanistan. It is hand-knotted with a wool pile and is 8–10 mm thick. The rug is made with a Bukhara pattern.

The Bukhara rug measures 117 cm in width, 181 cm in length and 8–10 mm in thickness. The knot density is approximately 180,000 knots/m². Knot density is one of the numerical characteristics of the pile structure. It should be considered alongside thickness; a thicker rug does not, in itself, mean denser knotting. The rug may also be suitable for a bedroom, provided the available space accommodates its dimensions.

This handmade rug has a pile knotted from wool. Knotted wool fibres form the pile of the rug. Pile direction matters for more than appearance: this is also the direction to follow when vacuuming. The way the surface reflects light may vary depending on which end of the rug you view it from.

The Afghan Bukhara rug is knotted by hand. Knots formed from wool yarn make up the pile of the rug; this construction method is one of the defining features of the rug. The video showing how it is made provides an overview of the process.

The video below presents the origin and making of the Afghan rug.

The width of 117 cm and length of 181 cm refer to this specific rug. Alongside the illustration of this type of rug, please also review the photographs of the actual product.

Bukhara rug: gentle care

For routine care of the Afghan Bukhara rug, use a low suction setting on your vacuum cleaner. Work in the direction of the pile and avoid rubbing the wool surface vigorously. Remember to keep the area beneath the rug clean as well; moving the rug occasionally allows you to remove dust that has collected underneath.

Treat small stains before they dry, using a clean, slightly damp cloth. Avoid vigorous rubbing and soaking the surface. Even a cleaning product suitable for wool should only be used as directed and after testing it first. If the dirt cannot be removed gently, or the whole rug needs cleaning, consult a professional rug cleaner.
