Afghan Kargai rug hand-knotted from wool
The key features of this Afghan Kargai rug are its 121 × 194 cm dimensions, 8–10 mm thickness and wool material. The rug originates from Afghanistan and is knotted by hand.
The Afghan Kargai rug is 121 cm wide, 194 cm long and 8–10 mm thick. Its knot density is approximately 180,000 knots/m². Knot density is one of the numerical characteristics of the pile structure. It should be considered alongside thickness; a thicker rug does not, in itself, mean denser knotting. This size may also be suitable for a bedroom.
This handmade rug has a pile knotted from wool. The knotted fibres form the surface of the rug that is walked on. The direction in which the fibres lie affects how they reflect light: the same surface may appear lighter from one end and darker from the other. Please bear this in mind when comparing the photographs.
The Afghan Kargai rug is knotted by hand. Knots formed from wool yarn make up the pile of the rug; this construction method is one of the defining features of the rug. The video showing how it is made provides an overview of the process.
The video below presents the origin and making of the Afghan rug.

Cleaning the hand-knotted wool pile
The hand-knotted wool pile requires gentle cleaning. When vacuuming the Afghan Kargai rug, select the lowest suction setting and work in the direction of the pile. Move the rug occasionally so that you can clean the area underneath. Regularly inspecting the Afghan rug also plays a part in preventing moth damage.
With stains, prompt and gentle treatment is important. Try removing fresh dirt with a slightly damp cloth, without soaking or vigorous rubbing. Use only a cleaning product suitable for Afghan rugs, following the manufacturer's instructions and testing it first. For more extensive cleaning, choose a professional experienced in caring for handmade Oriental rugs.
