Brown Kargai Afghan rug 123x187 cm – handmade Oriental rug

Introducing the 123 × 187 cm Afghan Kargai rug

The key features of this Afghan Kargai rug are its 123 × 187 cm dimensions, 8–10 mm thickness and wool material. The rug originates from Afghanistan and is knotted by hand.

The Afghan Kargai rug is 123 cm wide, 187 cm long and 8–10 mm thick. Its knot density is approximately 180,000 knots/m². This figure indicates the number of knots per unit of surface area. Thickness is a separate characteristic: these two measurements describe different aspects of the knotted structure. Its dimensions may also make it suitable for a bedroom.

The knotted part of this handmade rug is made of wool. The fibres of the hand-knotted pile lie in a particular direction. Changes in lighting and viewing angle can therefore produce a lighter or darker overall appearance. This difference between photographs taken from opposite ends of the rug is related to the direction of the pile.

The Afghan Kargai rug is knotted by hand. Knots formed from wool yarn make up the pile of the rug; this construction method is one of the defining features of the rug. The video showing how it is made provides an overview of the process.

The video below presents the origin and making of the Afghan rug.

When choosing this Afghan Kargai rug, consider the photographs of the actual product together with its 123 × 187 cm dimensions. The presentation below provides further visual information about this type of rug.

Cleaning the hand-knotted wool pile

When cleaning the Afghan Kargai rug, protecting the wool fibres should be your first consideration. Vacuum on a low setting, following the direction of the pile. Clean underneath the rug regularly and inspect the less visible areas from time to time. Regularly check the less visible parts of the rug for dirt as well.

Treat fresh stains as soon as possible with a clean, slightly damp cloth. Do not rub the stain vigorously or soak the rug. Choose only a cleaning product suitable for wool and follow its instructions for use. Test it on a less visible area first; for stubborn stains or more extensive cleaning, consult a professional experienced in handmade Oriental rugs.
