Burgundy Khal Mohammadi Afghan rug 117x188 cm – handmade Oriental rug

Afghan Khal Mohammadi rug: features of the knotted pile

This Afghan Khal Mohammadi rug is a handmade Oriental rug of Afghan origin, measuring 117 × 188 cm. With its wool pile, it is 8–10 mm thick. The rug has a burgundy colour palette.

The Khal Mohammadi rug measures 117 cm in width, 188 cm in length and 8–10 mm in thickness. The knot density is approximately 180,000 knots/m². Knot density is one of the numerical characteristics of the pile structure. It should be considered alongside thickness; a thicker rug does not, in itself, mean denser knotting. The rug may also be suitable for a bedroom, provided the available space accommodates its dimensions.

This handmade rug has a pile hand-knotted from wool yarn. Hand knotting and the wool pile define the structure of the rug. The direction in which the pile lies affects the appearance: the same rug can look lighter or darker when viewed from different directions. It is therefore useful to compare product photographs taken from different angles before buying.

The Afghan Khal Mohammadi rug is knotted by hand. Knots formed from wool yarn make up the pile of the rug; this construction method is one of the defining features of the rug. The video showing how it is made provides an overview of the process.

The video below presents the origin and making of the Afghan rug.

The width of 117 cm and length of 188 cm refer to this specific rug. Alongside the illustration of this type of rug, please also review the photographs of the actual product.

Cleaning information for this Afghan rug

The hand-knotted wool pile requires gentle cleaning. When vacuuming the Afghan Khal Mohammadi rug, select the lowest suction setting and work in the direction of the pile. Move the rug occasionally so that you can clean the area underneath. Regularly inspecting the Afghan rug also plays a part in preventing moth damage.

With stains, prompt and gentle treatment is important. Try removing fresh dirt with a slightly damp cloth, without soaking or vigorous rubbing. Use only a cleaning product suitable for Afghan rugs, following the manufacturer's instructions and testing it first. For more extensive cleaning, choose a professional experienced in caring for handmade Oriental rugs.
