Afghan Khal Mohammadi rug: details of the selected size
This Afghan Khal Mohammadi rug is a handmade Oriental rug of Afghan origin, measuring 120 × 184 cm. With its wool pile, it is 8–10 mm thick. The rug has a burgundy colour palette.
The Khal Mohammadi rug measures 120 cm in width, 184 cm in length and 8–10 mm in thickness. Its knot density is approximately 180,000 knots/m². The knot count is given per square metre, allowing this rug to be compared with handmade Oriental rugs of different sizes in this respect. This figure does not represent the total number of knots in the entire rug. The rug may also be suitable for a bedroom, provided the available space accommodates its dimensions.
This handmade rug has a pile hand-knotted from wool yarn. The appearance of the wool surface may change with the viewing angle. This is due to the direction of the knotted pile: the rug reflects more light from one direction and may look darker from the other. It is therefore useful to compare product photographs taken from several directions.
The Afghan Khal Mohammadi rug is knotted by hand. Knots formed from wool yarn make up the pile of the rug; this construction method is one of the defining features of the rug. The video showing how it is made provides an overview of the process.
The video below presents the origin and making of the Afghan rug.
When choosing this Afghan Khal Mohammadi rug, consider the photographs of the actual product together with its 120 × 184 cm dimensions. The presentation below provides further visual information about this type of rug.

Caring for your Khal Mohammadi rug
When cleaning the Afghan Khal Mohammadi rug, protecting the wool fibres should be your first consideration. Vacuum on a low setting, following the direction of the pile. Clean underneath the rug regularly and inspect the less visible areas from time to time. Regularly check the less visible parts of the rug for dirt as well.
Treat fresh stains as soon as possible with a clean, slightly damp cloth. Do not rub the stain vigorously or soak the rug. Choose only a cleaning product suitable for wool and follow its instructions for use. Test it on a less visible area first; for stubborn stains or more extensive cleaning, consult a professional experienced in handmade Oriental rugs.
