Burgundy Khal Mohammadi Afghan rug 125x192 cm – handmade Oriental rug

Afghan Khal Mohammadi rug: dimensions, material and making

This 125 × 192 cm Afghan Khal Mohammadi rug originates from Afghanistan. It is hand-knotted with a wool pile and is 8–10 mm thick. Shades of burgundy define the colour palette of the rug.

The Khal Mohammadi rug measures 125 cm in width, 192 cm in length and 8–10 mm in thickness. Thickness is a separate characteristic of the pile, while the width and length describe the area covered by the rug. Checking these measurements together before ordering gives you a clearer picture of the rug you have selected. This size may also be suitable for a bedroom.

This handmade rug has a pile hand-knotted from wool yarn. The knotted fibres form the surface of the rug that is walked on. The direction in which the fibres lie affects how they reflect light: the same surface may appear lighter from one end and darker from the other. Please bear this in mind when comparing the photographs.

The Afghan Khal Mohammadi rug is knotted by hand. Knots formed from wool yarn make up the pile of the rug; this construction method is one of the defining features of the rug. The video showing how it is made provides an overview of the process.

The video below presents the origin and making of the Afghan rug.

When choosing this Afghan Khal Mohammadi rug, consider the photographs of the actual product together with its 125 × 192 cm dimensions. The presentation below provides further visual information about this type of rug.

Caring for your Khal Mohammadi rug

For routine care of the Afghan Khal Mohammadi rug, use a low suction setting on your vacuum cleaner. Work in the direction of the pile and avoid rubbing the wool surface vigorously. Remember to keep the area beneath the rug clean as well; moving the rug occasionally allows you to remove dust that has collected underneath.

Treat fresh stains as soon as possible with a clean, slightly damp cloth. Do not rub the stain vigorously or soak the rug. Choose only a cleaning product suitable for wool and follow its instructions for use. Test it on a less visible area first; for stubborn stains or more extensive cleaning, consult a professional experienced in handmade Oriental rugs.
