Afghan rug with a Caucasian pattern: details of the selected size
This Afghan rug with a Caucasian pattern measures 254 cm in width and 352 cm in length. This handmade Afghan rug is knotted by hand in Afghanistan and is 8–10 mm thick. The rug has a blue and burgundy colour palette.
The rug with a Caucasian pattern is 254 cm wide, 352 cm long and 8–10 mm thick. Its knot density is approximately 180,000 knots/m². This figure indicates the number of knots per unit of surface area. Thickness is a separate characteristic: these two measurements describe different aspects of the knotted structure. This size may also be suitable for a living room.
This handmade rug has a pile hand-knotted from wool yarn. The fibres of the hand-knotted pile lie in a particular direction. Changes in lighting and viewing angle can therefore produce a lighter or darker overall appearance. This difference between photographs taken from opposite ends of the rug is related to the direction of the pile.
This Afghan rug with a Caucasian pattern is knotted by hand. Knots formed from wool yarn make up the pile of the rug; this construction method is one of the defining features of the rug. The video showing how it is made provides an overview of the process.
The video below presents the origin and making of the Afghan rug.

Rug with a Caucasian pattern: gentle care
The hand-knotted wool pile requires gentle cleaning. When vacuuming this Afghan rug with a Caucasian pattern, select the lowest suction setting and work in the direction of the pile. Move the rug occasionally so that you can clean the area underneath. Regularly inspecting the Afghan rug also plays a part in preventing moth damage.
Treat fresh stains as soon as possible with a clean, slightly damp cloth. Do not rub the stain vigorously or soak the rug. Choose only a cleaning product suitable for wool and follow its instructions for use. Test it on a less visible area first; for stubborn stains or more extensive cleaning, consult a professional experienced in handmade Oriental rugs.
