Afshar naqsha Oriental rug 205x293 cm – handmade Afghan rug

Afghan rug hand-knotted from wool

This 205 × 293 cm Afghan rug originates from Afghanistan. It is hand-knotted with a wool pile and is 8–10 mm thick. The rug has a brown colour palette.

The Afghan rug is 205 cm wide, 293 cm long and 8–10 mm thick. Its knot density is approximately 180,000 knots/m². Knot density is one of the numerical characteristics of the pile structure. It should be considered alongside thickness; a thicker rug does not, in itself, mean denser knotting. The rug may also be suitable for a living room, provided the available space accommodates its dimensions.

This handmade rug has a pile hand-knotted from wool yarn. The fibres of the hand-knotted pile lie in a particular direction. Changes in lighting and viewing angle can therefore produce a lighter or darker overall appearance. This difference between photographs taken from opposite ends of the rug is related to the direction of the pile.

The Afghan rug is knotted by hand. Knots formed from wool yarn make up the pile of the rug; this construction method is one of the defining features of the rug. The video showing how it is made provides an overview of the process.

The video below presents the origin and making of the Afghan rug.

Cleaning information for this Afghan rug

Regular, gentle vacuuming is the basis of caring for the Afghan rug. Set the vacuum cleaner to low suction and move the head in the direction of the wool pile. Keep the area beneath the rug clean as well. Avoid vigorous rubbing of the wool pile and, where possible, treat stains before they dry.

Treat small stains before they dry, using a clean, slightly damp cloth. Avoid vigorous rubbing and soaking the surface. Even a cleaning product suitable for wool should only be used as directed and after testing it first. If the dirt cannot be removed gently, or the whole rug needs cleaning, consult a professional rug cleaner.
