Afshar naqsha Oriental rug 206x290 cm – handmade Afghan rug

Afghan rug: dimensions, material and making

This 206 × 290 cm Afghan rug originates from Afghanistan. It is hand-knotted with a wool pile and is 8–10 mm thick. The rug has a burgundy and beige colour palette.

The Afghan rug is 206 cm wide, 290 cm long and 8–10 mm thick. The knot density is approximately 180,000 knots/m². The knot count is given per square metre, allowing this rug to be compared with handmade Oriental rugs of different sizes in this respect. This figure does not represent the total number of knots in the entire rug. The rug may also be suitable for a living room, provided the available space accommodates its dimensions.

The knotted part of this handmade rug is made of wool. The appearance of the wool surface may change with the viewing angle. This is due to the direction of the knotted pile: the rug reflects more light from one direction and may look darker from the other. It is therefore useful to compare product photographs taken from several directions.

The Afghan rug is knotted by hand. Knots formed from wool yarn make up the pile of the rug; this construction method is one of the defining features of the rug. The video showing how it is made provides an overview of the process.

The video below presents the origin and making of the Afghan rug.

The width of 206 cm and length of 290 cm refer to this specific rug. Alongside the illustration of this type of rug, please also review the photographs of the actual product.

Afghan rug: gentle care

Regular, gentle vacuuming is the basis of caring for the Afghan rug. Set the vacuum cleaner to low suction and move the head in the direction of the wool pile. Keep the area beneath the rug clean as well. Avoid vigorous rubbing of the wool pile and, where possible, treat stains before they dry.

For spilled liquids, first blot up the moisture with a clean cloth. Do not rub the wool surface vigorously or use a cleaning product unless you know it is suitable for wool. Always test the chosen product in a less visible area first. For extensive or stubborn soiling, or a full clean, consult a professional.
