Aqcha Bukhara Oriental runner rug 81x190 cm – handmade Afghan rug

Afghan Aqcha runner rug hand-knotted from wool

The key features of this Afghan Aqcha runner rug are its 81 × 190 cm dimensions, 8–10 mm thickness and wool material. The rug originates from Afghanistan and is knotted by hand. Shades of blue define the colour palette of the rug.

The Aqcha runner rug is 81 cm wide, 190 cm long and 8–10 mm thick. Its knot density is approximately 80,000 knots/m². This figure indicates the number of knots per unit of surface area. Thickness is a separate characteristic: these two measurements describe different aspects of the knotted structure. The rug may also be suitable for a hallway, provided the available space accommodates its dimensions.

The knotted part of this handmade rug is made of wool. The knotted fibres form the surface of the rug that is walked on. The direction in which the fibres lie affects how they reflect light: the same surface may appear lighter from one end and darker from the other. Please bear this in mind when comparing the photographs.

The Afghan Aqcha runner rug is knotted by hand. Knots formed from wool yarn make up the pile of the rug; this construction method is one of the defining features of the rug. The video showing how it is made provides an overview of the process.

The video below presents the origin and making of the Afghan rug.

Cleaning the hand-knotted wool pile

Regular, gentle vacuuming is the basis of caring for the Afghan Aqcha runner rug. Set the vacuum cleaner to low suction and move the head in the direction of the wool pile. Keep the area beneath the rug clean as well. Avoid vigorous rubbing of the wool pile and, where possible, treat stains before they dry.

For spilled liquids, first blot up the moisture with a clean cloth. Do not rub the wool surface vigorously or use a cleaning product unless you know it is suitable for wool. Always test the chosen product in a less visible area first. For extensive or stubborn soiling, or a full clean, consult a professional.
