Gabbeh Oriental rug 140x200 cm – hand-knotted modern rug

Gabbeh rug: features of the knotted pile

This 140 × 200 cm Gabbeh rug originates from Afghanistan. It is hand-knotted with a wool pile and is 8–10 mm thick. The rug is brown.

The Gabbeh rug measures 140 cm in width, 200 cm in length and 8–10 mm in thickness. Its knot density is approximately 180,000 knots/m². This figure indicates the number of knots per unit of surface area. Thickness is a separate characteristic: these two measurements describe different aspects of the knotted structure. The rug may also be suitable for a living room, provided the available space accommodates its dimensions.

The knotted part of this handmade rug is made of wool. The fibres of the hand-knotted pile lie in a particular direction. Changes in lighting and viewing angle can therefore produce a lighter or darker overall appearance. This difference between photographs taken from opposite ends of the rug is related to the direction of the pile.

The Gabbeh rug is knotted by hand. Knots formed from wool yarn make up the pile of the rug; this construction method is one of the defining features of the rug. The video showing how it is made provides an overview of the process.

Gabbeh rug: gentle care

For routine care of the Gabbeh rug, use a low suction setting on your vacuum cleaner. Work in the direction of the pile and avoid rubbing the wool surface vigorously. Remember to keep the area beneath the rug clean as well; moving the rug occasionally allows you to remove dust that has collected underneath.

For spilled liquids, first blot up the moisture with a clean cloth. Do not rub the wool surface vigorously or use a cleaning product unless you know it is suitable for wool. Always test the chosen product in a less visible area first. For extensive or stubborn soiling, or a full clean, consult a professional.
