Gabbeh Oriental rug 146x207 cm – hand-knotted modern rug

Gabbeh rug: features of the knotted pile

This Gabbeh rug is a handmade Oriental rug of Afghan origin, measuring 146 × 207 cm. With its wool pile, it is 8–10 mm thick. The rug has a brown colour palette.

The Gabbeh rug measures 146 cm in width, 207 cm in length and 8–10 mm in thickness. The knot density is approximately 180,000 knots/m². This figure indicates the number of knots per unit of surface area. Thickness is a separate characteristic: these two measurements describe different aspects of the knotted structure. The rug may also be suitable for a living room, provided the available space accommodates its dimensions.

This handmade rug has a pile knotted from wool. The knotted fibres form the surface of the rug that is walked on. The direction in which the fibres lie affects how they reflect light: the same surface may appear lighter from one end and darker from the other. Please bear this in mind when comparing the photographs.

The Gabbeh rug is knotted by hand. Knots formed from wool yarn make up the pile of the rug; this construction method is one of the defining features of the rug. The video showing how it is made provides an overview of the process.

The video below presents the origin and making of the Afghan rug.

The width of 146 cm and length of 207 cm refer to this specific rug. Alongside the illustration of this type of rug, please also review the photographs of the actual product.

Gabbeh rug: gentle care

The hand-knotted wool pile requires gentle cleaning. When vacuuming the Gabbeh rug, select the lowest suction setting and work in the direction of the pile. Move the rug occasionally so that you can clean the area underneath. Regularly inspecting the Afghan rug also plays a part in preventing moth damage.

Treat small stains before they dry, using a clean, slightly damp cloth. Avoid vigorous rubbing and soaking the surface. Even a cleaning product suitable for wool should only be used as directed and after testing it first. If the dirt cannot be removed gently, or the whole rug needs cleaning, consult a professional rug cleaner.
