Gabbeh Oriental rug 147x194 cm – hand-knotted modern rug

Gabbeh rug from Afghanistan

The key features of this Gabbeh rug are its 147 × 194 cm dimensions, 8–10 mm thickness and wool material. The rug originates from Afghanistan and is knotted by hand. Shades of brown define the colour palette of the rug.

The Gabbeh rug measures 147 cm in width, 194 cm in length and 8–10 mm in thickness. The knot density is approximately 180,000 knots/m². Knot density is one of the numerical characteristics of the pile structure. It should be considered alongside thickness; a thicker rug does not, in itself, mean denser knotting. Its dimensions may also make it suitable for a bedroom.

This handmade rug has a pile hand-knotted from wool yarn. The knotted fibres form the surface of the rug that is walked on. The direction in which the fibres lie affects how they reflect light: the same surface may appear lighter from one end and darker from the other. Please bear this in mind when comparing the photographs.

The Gabbeh rug is knotted by hand. Knots formed from wool yarn make up the pile of the rug; this construction method is one of the defining features of the rug. The video showing how it is made provides an overview of the process.

The video below presents the origin and making of the Afghan rug.

The width of 147 cm and length of 194 cm refer to this specific rug. Alongside the illustration of this type of rug, please also review the photographs of the actual product.

Cleaning the hand-knotted wool pile

When cleaning the Gabbeh rug, protecting the wool fibres should be your first consideration. Vacuum on a low setting, following the direction of the pile. Clean underneath the rug regularly and inspect the less visible areas from time to time. Regularly check the less visible parts of the rug for dirt as well.

Treat fresh stains as soon as possible with a clean, slightly damp cloth. Do not rub the stain vigorously or soak the rug. Choose only a cleaning product suitable for wool and follow its instructions for use. Test it on a less visible area first; for stubborn stains or more extensive cleaning, consult a professional experienced in handmade Oriental rugs.
