Gabbeh Oriental rug 150x195 cm – hand-knotted modern rug

Gabbeh rug: details of the selected size

This 150 × 195 cm Gabbeh rug originates from Afghanistan. It is hand-knotted with a wool pile and is 8–10 mm thick. The rug is brown.

The Gabbeh rug measures 150 cm in width, 195 cm in length and 8–10 mm in thickness. Its knot density is approximately 180,000 knots/m². This figure indicates the number of knots per unit of surface area. Thickness is a separate characteristic: these two measurements describe different aspects of the knotted structure. The rug may also be suitable for a bedroom, provided the available space accommodates its dimensions.

This handmade rug has a pile hand-knotted from wool yarn. The fibres of the hand-knotted pile lie in a particular direction. Changes in lighting and viewing angle can therefore produce a lighter or darker overall appearance. This difference between photographs taken from opposite ends of the rug is related to the direction of the pile.

The Gabbeh rug is knotted by hand. Knots formed from wool yarn make up the pile of the rug; this construction method is one of the defining features of the rug. The video showing how it is made provides an overview of the process.

Cleaning information for this Afghan rug

The hand-knotted wool pile requires gentle cleaning. When vacuuming the Gabbeh rug, select the lowest suction setting and work in the direction of the pile. Move the rug occasionally so that you can clean the area underneath. Regularly inspecting the Afghan rug also plays a part in preventing moth damage.

Treat small stains before they dry, using a clean, slightly damp cloth. Avoid vigorous rubbing and soaking the surface. Even a cleaning product suitable for wool should only be used as directed and after testing it first. If the dirt cannot be removed gently, or the whole rug needs cleaning, consult a professional rug cleaner.
