Gabbeh Oriental rug 153x191 cm – hand-knotted modern rug

Gabbeh rug hand-knotted from wool

The key features of this Gabbeh rug are its 153 × 191 cm dimensions, 8–10 mm thickness and wool material. The rug originates from Afghanistan and is knotted by hand. Shades of brown define the colour palette of the rug.

The Gabbeh rug measures 153 cm in width, 191 cm in length and 8–10 mm in thickness. The knot density is approximately 180,000 knots/m². The knot count is given per square metre, allowing this rug to be compared with handmade Oriental rugs of different sizes in this respect. This figure does not represent the total number of knots in the entire rug. This size may also be suitable for a bedroom.

This handmade rug has a pile knotted from wool. The fibres of the hand-knotted pile lie in a particular direction. Changes in lighting and viewing angle can therefore produce a lighter or darker overall appearance. This difference between photographs taken from opposite ends of the rug is related to the direction of the pile.

The Gabbeh rug is knotted by hand. Knots formed from wool yarn make up the pile of the rug; this construction method is one of the defining features of the rug. The video showing how it is made provides an overview of the process.

The video below presents the origin and making of the Afghan rug.

The width of 153 cm and length of 191 cm refer to this specific rug. Alongside the illustration of this type of rug, please also review the photographs of the actual product.

Gabbeh rug: gentle care

For routine care of the Gabbeh rug, use a low suction setting on your vacuum cleaner. Work in the direction of the pile and avoid rubbing the wool surface vigorously. Remember to keep the area beneath the rug clean as well; moving the rug occasionally allows you to remove dust that has collected underneath.

Treat small stains before they dry, using a clean, slightly damp cloth. Avoid vigorous rubbing and soaking the surface. Even a cleaning product suitable for wool should only be used as directed and after testing it first. If the dirt cannot be removed gently, or the whole rug needs cleaning, consult a professional rug cleaner.
