Introducing the 188 × 292 cm Gabbeh rug
This Gabbeh rug measures 188 cm in width and 292 cm in length. This handmade Afghan rug is knotted by hand in Afghanistan and is 8–10 mm thick. Shades of brown define the colour palette of the rug.
The Gabbeh rug measures 188 cm in width, 292 cm in length and 8–10 mm in thickness. Its knot density is approximately 180,000 knots/m². The knot count is given per square metre, allowing this rug to be compared with handmade Oriental rugs of different sizes in this respect. This figure does not represent the total number of knots in the entire rug. The rug may also be suitable for a living room, provided the available space accommodates its dimensions.
This handmade rug has a pile knotted from wool. The knotted fibres form the surface of the rug that is walked on. The direction in which the fibres lie affects how they reflect light: the same surface may appear lighter from one end and darker from the other. Please bear this in mind when comparing the photographs.
The Gabbeh rug is knotted by hand. Knots formed from wool yarn make up the pile of the rug; this construction method is one of the defining features of the rug. The video showing how it is made provides an overview of the process.
The video below presents the origin and making of the Afghan rug.

Cleaning information for this Afghan rug
Regular, gentle vacuuming is the basis of caring for the Gabbeh rug. Set the vacuum cleaner to low suction and move the head in the direction of the wool pile. Keep the area beneath the rug clean as well. Avoid vigorous rubbing of the wool pile and, where possible, treat stains before they dry.
Treat small stains before they dry, using a clean, slightly damp cloth. Avoid vigorous rubbing and soaking the surface. Even a cleaning product suitable for wool should only be used as directed and after testing it first. If the dirt cannot be removed gently, or the whole rug needs cleaning, consult a professional rug cleaner.
The video below shows how to clean the hand-knotted pile of a handmade Oriental rug at home.
