Gabbeh Oriental rug 198x290 cm – hand-knotted modern rug

Gabbeh rug from Afghanistan

This 198 × 290 cm Gabbeh rug originates from Afghanistan. It is hand-knotted with a wool pile and is 8–10 mm thick. The rug is brown.

The Gabbeh rug measures 198 cm in width, 290 cm in length and 8–10 mm in thickness. Its knot density is approximately 180,000 knots/m². Knot density is one of the numerical characteristics of the pile structure. It should be considered alongside thickness; a thicker rug does not, in itself, mean denser knotting. Its dimensions may also make it suitable for a living room.

This handmade rug has a pile hand-knotted from wool yarn. Knotted wool fibres form the pile of the rug. Pile direction matters for more than appearance: this is also the direction to follow when vacuuming. The way the surface reflects light may vary depending on which end of the rug you view it from.

The Gabbeh rug is knotted by hand. Knots formed from wool yarn make up the pile of the rug; this construction method is one of the defining features of the rug. The video showing how it is made provides an overview of the process.

The video below presents the origin and making of the Afghan rug.

The width of 198 cm and length of 290 cm refer to this specific rug. Alongside the illustration of this type of rug, please also review the photographs of the actual product.

Gabbeh rug: gentle care

The hand-knotted wool pile requires gentle cleaning. When vacuuming the Gabbeh rug, select the lowest suction setting and work in the direction of the pile. Move the rug occasionally so that you can clean the area underneath. Regularly inspecting the Afghan rug also plays a part in preventing moth damage.

Treat fresh stains as soon as possible with a clean, slightly damp cloth. Do not rub the stain vigorously or soak the rug. Choose only a cleaning product suitable for wool and follow its instructions for use. Test it on a less visible area first; for stubborn stains or more extensive cleaning, consult a professional experienced in handmade Oriental rugs.
