Gabbeh Oriental rug 198x294 cm – hand-knotted modern rug

Gabbeh rug from Afghanistan

This Gabbeh rug is a handmade Oriental rug of Afghan origin, measuring 198 × 294 cm. With its wool pile, it is 8–10 mm thick. The rug is brown.

The Gabbeh rug measures 198 cm in width, 294 cm in length and 8–10 mm in thickness. The knot density is approximately 180,000 knots/m². This figure indicates the number of knots per unit of surface area. Thickness is a separate characteristic: these two measurements describe different aspects of the knotted structure. The rug may also be suitable for a living room, provided the available space accommodates its dimensions.

The knotted part of this handmade rug is made of wool. The fibres of the hand-knotted pile lie in a particular direction. Changes in lighting and viewing angle can therefore produce a lighter or darker overall appearance. This difference between photographs taken from opposite ends of the rug is related to the direction of the pile.

The Gabbeh rug is knotted by hand. Knots formed from wool yarn make up the pile of the rug; this construction method is one of the defining features of the rug. The video showing how it is made provides an overview of the process.

The video below presents the origin and making of the Afghan rug.

Cleaning information for this Afghan rug

When cleaning the Gabbeh rug, protecting the wool fibres should be your first consideration. Vacuum on a low setting, following the direction of the pile. Clean underneath the rug regularly and inspect the less visible areas from time to time. Regularly check the less visible parts of the rug for dirt as well.

Treat fresh stains as soon as possible with a clean, slightly damp cloth. Do not rub the stain vigorously or soak the rug. Choose only a cleaning product suitable for wool and follow its instructions for use. Test it on a less visible area first; for stubborn stains or more extensive cleaning, consult a professional experienced in handmade Oriental rugs.
