Gabbeh Oriental rug 199x288 cm – hand-knotted modern rug

Gabbeh rug hand-knotted from wool

This Gabbeh rug measures 199 cm in width and 288 cm in length. This handmade Afghan rug is knotted by hand in Afghanistan and is 8–10 mm thick. The rug is brown.

The Gabbeh rug measures 199 cm in width, 288 cm in length and 8–10 mm in thickness. Its knot density is approximately 180,000 knots/m². Knot density is one of the numerical characteristics of the pile structure. It should be considered alongside thickness; a thicker rug does not, in itself, mean denser knotting. This size may also be suitable for a living room.

This handmade rug has a pile knotted from wool. The knotted fibres form the surface of the rug that is walked on. The direction in which the fibres lie affects how they reflect light: the same surface may appear lighter from one end and darker from the other. Please bear this in mind when comparing the photographs.

The Gabbeh rug is knotted by hand. Knots formed from wool yarn make up the pile of the rug; this construction method is one of the defining features of the rug. The video showing how it is made provides an overview of the process.

The video below presents the origin and making of the Afghan rug.

Cleaning information for this Afghan rug

Regular, gentle vacuuming is the basis of caring for the Gabbeh rug. Set the vacuum cleaner to low suction and move the head in the direction of the wool pile. Keep the area beneath the rug clean as well. Avoid vigorous rubbing of the wool pile and, where possible, treat stains before they dry.

Treat fresh stains as soon as possible with a clean, slightly damp cloth. Do not rub the stain vigorously or soak the rug. Choose only a cleaning product suitable for wool and follow its instructions for use. Test it on a less visible area first; for stubborn stains or more extensive cleaning, consult a professional experienced in handmade Oriental rugs.
