Gabbeh Oriental rug 200x290 cm – hand-knotted modern rug

Gabbeh rug: dimensions, material and making

This 200 × 290 cm Gabbeh rug originates from Afghanistan. It is hand-knotted with a wool pile and is 8–10 mm thick. The rug is brown.

The Gabbeh rug measures 200 cm in width, 290 cm in length and 8–10 mm in thickness. Its knot density is approximately 180,000 knots/m². The knot count is given per square metre, allowing this rug to be compared with handmade Oriental rugs of different sizes in this respect. This figure does not represent the total number of knots in the entire rug. Its dimensions may also make it suitable for a living room.

This handmade rug has a pile hand-knotted from wool yarn. The appearance of the wool surface may change with the viewing angle. This is due to the direction of the knotted pile: the rug reflects more light from one direction and may look darker from the other. It is therefore useful to compare product photographs taken from several directions.

The Gabbeh rug is knotted by hand. Knots formed from wool yarn make up the pile of the rug; this construction method is one of the defining features of the rug. The video showing how it is made provides an overview of the process.

The video below presents the origin and making of the Afghan rug.

When choosing this Gabbeh rug, consider the photographs of the actual product together with its 200 × 290 cm dimensions. The presentation below provides further visual information about this type of rug.

Cleaning information for this Afghan rug

For routine care of the Gabbeh rug, use a low suction setting on your vacuum cleaner. Work in the direction of the pile and avoid rubbing the wool surface vigorously. Remember to keep the area beneath the rug clean as well; moving the rug occasionally allows you to remove dust that has collected underneath.

Treat small stains before they dry, using a clean, slightly damp cloth. Avoid vigorous rubbing and soaking the surface. Even a cleaning product suitable for wool should only be used as directed and after testing it first. If the dirt cannot be removed gently, or the whole rug needs cleaning, consult a professional rug cleaner.
