Gabbeh rug 198x290 cm – hand-knotted modern rug

Gabbeh rug hand-knotted from wool

This Gabbeh rug is a handmade Oriental rug of Afghan origin, measuring 198 × 290 cm. With its wool pile, it is 8–10 mm thick. Shades of brown define the colour palette of the rug.

The Gabbeh rug measures 198 cm in width, 290 cm in length and 8–10 mm in thickness. Its knot density is approximately 180,000 knots/m². Knot density is one of the numerical characteristics of the pile structure. It should be considered alongside thickness; a thicker rug does not, in itself, mean denser knotting. Its dimensions may also make it suitable for a living room.

This handmade rug has a pile knotted from wool. The knotted fibres form the surface of the rug that is walked on. The direction in which the fibres lie affects how they reflect light: the same surface may appear lighter from one end and darker from the other. Please bear this in mind when comparing the photographs.

The Gabbeh rug is knotted by hand. Knots formed from wool yarn make up the pile of the rug; this construction method is one of the defining features of the rug. The video showing how it is made provides an overview of the process.

The video below presents the origin and making of the Afghan rug.

When choosing this Gabbeh rug, consider the photographs of the actual product together with its 198 × 290 cm dimensions. The presentation below provides further visual information about this type of rug.

Caring for your Gabbeh rug

For routine care of the Gabbeh rug, use a low suction setting on your vacuum cleaner. Work in the direction of the pile and avoid rubbing the wool surface vigorously. Remember to keep the area beneath the rug clean as well; moving the rug occasionally allows you to remove dust that has collected underneath.

For spilled liquids, first blot up the moisture with a clean cloth. Do not rub the wool surface vigorously or use a cleaning product unless you know it is suitable for wool. Always test the chosen product in a less visible area first. For extensive or stubborn soiling, or a full clean, consult a professional.
