Gabbeh Oriental rug 200x294 cm – hand-knotted modern rug

Gabbeh rug: dimensions, material and making

This Gabbeh rug is a handmade Oriental rug of Afghan origin, measuring 200 × 294 cm. With its wool pile, it is 8–10 mm thick. The rug is brown.

The Gabbeh rug measures 200 cm in width, 294 cm in length and 8–10 mm in thickness. Thickness is a separate characteristic of the pile, while the width and length describe the area covered by the rug. Checking these measurements together before ordering gives you a clearer picture of the rug you have selected. The rug may also be suitable for a living room, provided the available space accommodates its dimensions.

This handmade rug has a pile hand-knotted from wool yarn. The fibres of the hand-knotted pile lie in a particular direction. Changes in lighting and viewing angle can therefore produce a lighter or darker overall appearance. This difference between photographs taken from opposite ends of the rug is related to the direction of the pile.

The Gabbeh rug is knotted by hand. Knots formed from wool yarn make up the pile of the rug; this construction method is one of the defining features of the rug. The video showing how it is made provides an overview of the process.

The video below presents the origin and making of the Afghan rug.

When choosing this Gabbeh rug, consider the photographs of the actual product together with its 200 × 294 cm dimensions. The presentation below provides further visual information about this type of rug.

Gabbeh rug: gentle care

When cleaning the Gabbeh rug, protecting the wool fibres should be your first consideration. Vacuum on a low setting, following the direction of the pile. Clean underneath the rug regularly and inspect the less visible areas from time to time. Regularly check the less visible parts of the rug for dirt as well.

With stains, prompt and gentle treatment is important. Try removing fresh dirt with a slightly damp cloth, without soaking or vigorous rubbing. Use only a cleaning product suitable for Afghan rugs, following the manufacturer's instructions and testing it first. For more extensive cleaning, choose a professional experienced in caring for handmade Oriental rugs.
