Gabbeh rug: details of the selected size
This Gabbeh rug is a handmade Oriental rug of Afghan origin, measuring 146 × 193 cm. With its wool pile, it is 8–10 mm thick. Shades of brown define the colour palette of the rug.
The Gabbeh rug measures 146 cm in width, 193 cm in length and 8–10 mm in thickness. The knot density is approximately 180,000 knots/m². The knot count is given per square metre, allowing this rug to be compared with handmade Oriental rugs of different sizes in this respect. This figure does not represent the total number of knots in the entire rug. This size may also be suitable for a bedroom.
The knotted part of this handmade rug is made of wool. The appearance of the wool surface may change with the viewing angle. This is due to the direction of the knotted pile: the rug reflects more light from one direction and may look darker from the other. It is therefore useful to compare product photographs taken from several directions.
The Gabbeh rug is knotted by hand. Knots formed from wool yarn make up the pile of the rug; this construction method is one of the defining features of the rug. The video showing how it is made provides an overview of the process.
The video below presents the origin and making of the Afghan rug.
When choosing this Gabbeh rug, consider the photographs of the actual product together with its 146 × 193 cm dimensions. The presentation below provides further visual information about this type of rug.

Cleaning the hand-knotted wool pile
When cleaning the Gabbeh rug, protecting the wool fibres should be your first consideration. Vacuum on a low setting, following the direction of the pile. Clean underneath the rug regularly and inspect the less visible areas from time to time. Regularly check the less visible parts of the rug for dirt as well.
With stains, prompt and gentle treatment is important. Try removing fresh dirt with a slightly damp cloth, without soaking or vigorous rubbing. Use only a cleaning product suitable for Afghan rugs, following the manufacturer's instructions and testing it first. For more extensive cleaning, choose a professional experienced in caring for handmade Oriental rugs.
