Afghan Khal Mohammadi rug: features of the knotted pile
This Afghan Khal Mohammadi rug is a handmade Oriental rug of Afghan origin, measuring 100 × 140 cm. With its wool pile, it is 8–10 mm thick. The rug has a burgundy colour palette.
The Khal Mohammadi rug measures 100 cm in width, 140 cm in length and 8–10 mm in thickness. It is worth measuring out the exact width and length in the available space before ordering. The photograph shows the appearance of the rug, but both dimensions are needed to assess its actual size. Its dimensions may also make it suitable for a bedroom.
This handmade rug has a pile hand-knotted from wool yarn. The knotted fibres form the surface of the rug that is walked on. The direction in which the fibres lie affects how they reflect light: the same surface may appear lighter from one end and darker from the other. Please bear this in mind when comparing the photographs.
The Afghan Khal Mohammadi rug is knotted by hand. Knots formed from wool yarn make up the pile of the rug; this construction method is one of the defining features of the rug. The video showing how it is made provides an overview of the process.
The video below presents the origin and making of the Afghan rug.
The width of 100 cm and length of 140 cm refer to this specific rug. Alongside the illustration of this type of rug, please also review the photographs of the actual product.

Cleaning information for this Afghan rug
The hand-knotted wool pile requires gentle cleaning. When vacuuming the Afghan Khal Mohammadi rug, select the lowest suction setting and work in the direction of the pile. Move the rug occasionally so that you can clean the area underneath. Regularly inspecting the Afghan rug also plays a part in preventing moth damage.
For spilled liquids, first blot up the moisture with a clean cloth. Do not rub the wool surface vigorously or use a cleaning product unless you know it is suitable for wool. Always test the chosen product in a less visible area first. For extensive or stubborn soiling, or a full clean, consult a professional.
