Afghan rug hand-knotted from wool
This 300 × 404 cm Afghan rug originates from Afghanistan. It is hand-knotted with a wool pile and is 8–10 mm thick. Shades of burgundy define the colour palette of the rug. The rug is made with an Elephant foot pattern.
The Afghan rug is 300 cm wide, 404 cm long and 8–10 mm thick. Dimensions are particularly important when choosing online: the proportions visible in photographs should be considered alongside them. Checking the full width and length together helps you decide whether the rug you have selected is the right size. Its dimensions may also make it suitable for a living room.
This handmade rug has a pile knotted from wool. The knotted fibres form the surface of the rug that is walked on. The direction in which the fibres lie affects how they reflect light: the same surface may appear lighter from one end and darker from the other. Please bear this in mind when comparing the photographs.
The Afghan rug is knotted by hand. Knots formed from wool yarn make up the pile of the rug; this construction method is one of the defining features of the rug. The video showing how it is made provides an overview of the process.
The video below presents the origin and making of the Afghan rug.
The width of 300 cm and length of 404 cm refer to this specific rug. Alongside the illustration of this type of rug, please also review the photographs of the actual product.

Afghan rug: gentle care
For routine care of the Afghan rug, use a low suction setting on your vacuum cleaner. Work in the direction of the pile and avoid rubbing the wool surface vigorously. Remember to keep the area beneath the rug clean as well; moving the rug occasionally allows you to remove dust that has collected underneath.
With stains, prompt and gentle treatment is important. Try removing fresh dirt with a slightly damp cloth, without soaking or vigorous rubbing. Use only a cleaning product suitable for Afghan rugs, following the manufacturer's instructions and testing it first. For more extensive cleaning, choose a professional experienced in caring for handmade Oriental rugs.
