Brown Kargai Afghan rug 83x124 cm – handmade Oriental rug

Afghan Kargai rug: features of the knotted pile

This Afghan Kargai rug measures 83 cm in width and 124 cm in length. This handmade Afghan rug is knotted by hand in Afghanistan and is 8–10 mm thick.

The Afghan Kargai rug is 83 cm wide, 124 cm long and 8–10 mm thick. The knot density is approximately 180,000 knots/m². The knot count is given per square metre, allowing this rug to be compared with handmade Oriental rugs of different sizes in this respect. This figure does not represent the total number of knots in the entire rug. Its dimensions may also make it suitable for a bedroom.

The knotted part of this handmade rug is made of wool. The knotted fibres form the surface of the rug that is walked on. The direction in which the fibres lie affects how they reflect light: the same surface may appear lighter from one end and darker from the other. Please bear this in mind when comparing the photographs.

The Afghan Kargai rug is knotted by hand. Knots formed from wool yarn make up the pile of the rug; this construction method is one of the defining features of the rug. The video showing how it is made provides an overview of the process.

The video below presents the origin and making of the Afghan rug.

Cleaning information for this Afghan rug

The hand-knotted wool pile requires gentle cleaning. When vacuuming the Afghan Kargai rug, select the lowest suction setting and work in the direction of the pile. Move the rug occasionally so that you can clean the area underneath. Regularly inspecting the Afghan rug also plays a part in preventing moth damage.

For spilled liquids, first blot up the moisture with a clean cloth. Do not rub the wool surface vigorously or use a cleaning product unless you know it is suitable for wool. Always test the chosen product in a less visible area first. For extensive or stubborn soiling, or a full clean, consult a professional.
