Burgundy Khal Mohammadi Oriental rug 99x143 cm – handmade Afghan rug

Afghan Khal Mohammadi rug: dimensions, material and making

This Afghan Khal Mohammadi rug is a handmade Oriental rug of Afghan origin, measuring 99 × 143 cm. With its wool pile, it is 8–10 mm thick. The rug has a burgundy colour palette.

The Khal Mohammadi rug measures 99 cm in width, 143 cm in length and 8–10 mm in thickness. The knot density is approximately 180,000 knots/m². This figure indicates the number of knots per unit of surface area. Thickness is a separate characteristic: these two measurements describe different aspects of the knotted structure. This size may also be suitable for a bedroom.

This handmade rug has a pile hand-knotted from wool yarn. Knotted wool fibres form the pile of the rug. Pile direction matters for more than appearance: this is also the direction to follow when vacuuming. The way the surface reflects light may vary depending on which end of the rug you view it from.

The Afghan Khal Mohammadi rug is knotted by hand. Knots formed from wool yarn make up the pile of the rug; this construction method is one of the defining features of the rug. The video showing how it is made provides an overview of the process.

The video below presents the origin and making of the Afghan rug.

Cleaning the hand-knotted wool pile

For routine care of the Afghan Khal Mohammadi rug, use a low suction setting on your vacuum cleaner. Work in the direction of the pile and avoid rubbing the wool surface vigorously. Remember to keep the area beneath the rug clean as well; moving the rug occasionally allows you to remove dust that has collected underneath.

With stains, prompt and gentle treatment is important. Try removing fresh dirt with a slightly damp cloth, without soaking or vigorous rubbing. Use only a cleaning product suitable for Afghan rugs, following the manufacturer's instructions and testing it first. For more extensive cleaning, choose a professional experienced in caring for handmade Oriental rugs.
