Burgundy Khal Mohammadi Oriental rug 96x145 cm – handmade Afghan rug

Afghan Khal Mohammadi rug: dimensions, material and making

This 96 × 145 cm Afghan Khal Mohammadi rug originates from Afghanistan. It is hand-knotted with a wool pile and is 8–10 mm thick. The rug is burgundy.

The Khal Mohammadi rug measures 96 cm in width, 145 cm in length and 8–10 mm in thickness. Its knot density is approximately 180,000 knots/m². This figure indicates the number of knots per unit of surface area. Thickness is a separate characteristic: these two measurements describe different aspects of the knotted structure. This size may also be suitable for a bedroom.

The knotted part of this handmade rug is made of wool. Hand knotting and the wool pile define the structure of the rug. The direction in which the pile lies affects the appearance: the same rug can look lighter or darker when viewed from different directions. It is therefore useful to compare product photographs taken from different angles before buying.

The Afghan Khal Mohammadi rug is knotted by hand. Knots formed from wool yarn make up the pile of the rug; this construction method is one of the defining features of the rug. The video showing how it is made provides an overview of the process.

The video below presents the origin and making of the Afghan rug.

The width of 96 cm and length of 145 cm refer to this specific rug. Alongside the illustration of this type of rug, please also review the photographs of the actual product.

Cleaning the hand-knotted wool pile

For routine care of the Afghan Khal Mohammadi rug, use a low suction setting on your vacuum cleaner. Work in the direction of the pile and avoid rubbing the wool surface vigorously. Remember to keep the area beneath the rug clean as well; moving the rug occasionally allows you to remove dust that has collected underneath.

For spilled liquids, first blot up the moisture with a clean cloth. Do not rub the wool surface vigorously or use a cleaning product unless you know it is suitable for wool. Always test the chosen product in a less visible area first. For extensive or stubborn soiling, or a full clean, consult a professional.
