Afghan Khal Mohammadi runner rug from Afghanistan
This Afghan Khal Mohammadi runner rug is a handmade Oriental rug of Afghan origin, measuring 50 × 143 cm. With its wool pile, it is 8–10 mm thick. The rug has a burgundy colour palette.
The Khal Mohammadi runner rug measures 50 cm in width, 143 cm in length and 8–10 mm in thickness. Its knot density is approximately 180,000 knots/m². This figure indicates the number of knots per unit of surface area. Thickness is a separate characteristic: these two measurements describe different aspects of the knotted structure. Its dimensions may also make it suitable for a hallway.
This handmade rug has a pile knotted from wool. The knotted fibres form the surface of the rug that is walked on. The direction in which the fibres lie affects how they reflect light: the same surface may appear lighter from one end and darker from the other. Please bear this in mind when comparing the photographs.
The Afghan Khal Mohammadi runner rug is knotted by hand. Knots formed from wool yarn make up the pile of the rug; this construction method is one of the defining features of the rug. The video showing how it is made provides an overview of the process.

Cleaning information for this Afghan rug
Regular, gentle vacuuming is the basis of caring for the Afghan Khal Mohammadi runner rug. Set the vacuum cleaner to low suction and move the head in the direction of the wool pile. Keep the area beneath the rug clean as well. Avoid vigorous rubbing of the wool pile and, where possible, treat stains before they dry.
Treat fresh stains as soon as possible with a clean, slightly damp cloth. Do not rub the stain vigorously or soak the rug. Choose only a cleaning product suitable for wool and follow its instructions for use. Test it on a less visible area first; for stubborn stains or more extensive cleaning, consult a professional experienced in handmade Oriental rugs.
