Afghan runner rug with an Elephant foot pattern from Afghanistan
The key features of this Afghan runner rug with an Elephant foot pattern are its 99 × 887 cm dimensions, 8–10 mm thickness and wool material. The rug originates from Afghanistan and is knotted by hand. The rug is burgundy. The rug is made with an Elephant foot pattern.
The runner rug with an Elephant foot pattern is 99 cm wide, 887 cm long and 8–10 mm thick. Its knot density is approximately 180,000 knots/m². The knot count is given per square metre, allowing this rug to be compared with handmade Oriental rugs of different sizes in this respect. This figure does not represent the total number of knots in the entire rug. The rug may also be suitable for a hallway, provided the available space accommodates its dimensions.
This handmade rug has a pile hand-knotted from wool yarn. Hand knotting and the wool pile define the structure of the rug. The direction in which the pile lies affects the appearance: the same rug can look lighter or darker when viewed from different directions. It is therefore useful to compare product photographs taken from different angles before buying.
This Afghan runner rug with an Elephant foot pattern is knotted by hand. Knots formed from wool yarn make up the pile of the rug; this construction method is one of the defining features of the rug. The video showing how it is made provides an overview of the process.
The video below presents the origin and making of the Afghan rug.
Cleaning the hand-knotted wool pile
Regular, gentle vacuuming is the basis of caring for this Afghan runner rug with an Elephant foot pattern. Set the vacuum cleaner to low suction and move the head in the direction of the wool pile. Keep the area beneath the rug clean as well. Avoid vigorous rubbing of the wool pile and, where possible, treat stains before they dry.
Treat fresh stains as soon as possible with a clean, slightly damp cloth. Do not rub the stain vigorously or soak the rug. Choose only a cleaning product suitable for wool and follow its instructions for use. Test it on a less visible area first; for stubborn stains or more extensive cleaning, consult a professional experienced in handmade Oriental rugs.
