Afghan runner rug with an Elephant foot pattern from Afghanistan
This Afghan runner rug with an Elephant foot pattern is a handmade Oriental rug of Afghan origin, measuring 90 × 783 cm. With its wool pile, it is 8–10 mm thick. The rug has a burgundy colour palette. The rug is made with an Elephant foot pattern.
The runner rug with an Elephant foot pattern is 90 cm wide, 783 cm long and 8–10 mm thick. Its knot density is approximately 180,000 knots/m². The knot count is given per square metre, allowing this rug to be compared with handmade Oriental rugs of different sizes in this respect. This figure does not represent the total number of knots in the entire rug. This size may also be suitable for a hallway.
The knotted part of this handmade rug is made of wool. The fibres of the hand-knotted pile lie in a particular direction. Changes in lighting and viewing angle can therefore produce a lighter or darker overall appearance. This difference between photographs taken from opposite ends of the rug is related to the direction of the pile.
This Afghan runner rug with an Elephant foot pattern is knotted by hand. Knots formed from wool yarn make up the pile of the rug; this construction method is one of the defining features of the rug. The video showing how it is made provides an overview of the process.
The video below presents the origin and making of the Afghan rug.
Cleaning the hand-knotted wool pile
Regular, gentle vacuuming is the basis of caring for this Afghan runner rug with an Elephant foot pattern. Set the vacuum cleaner to low suction and move the head in the direction of the wool pile. Keep the area beneath the rug clean as well. Avoid vigorous rubbing of the wool pile and, where possible, treat stains before they dry.
Treat small stains before they dry, using a clean, slightly damp cloth. Avoid vigorous rubbing and soaking the surface. Even a cleaning product suitable for wool should only be used as directed and after testing it first. If the dirt cannot be removed gently, or the whole rug needs cleaning, consult a professional rug cleaner.
